Osaka Railways, 1935, by Toyonosuke Kurozumi

This striking poster promotes Osaka Railways and the launch of a new express train service in 1935. The artwork features a bold, modernist composition of steam locomotives rendered in simplified geometric shapes. Dominating the design are overlapping silhouettes of trains in vibrant pink, blue, and beige tones, accented with curved steam trails and bold horizontal lines, suggesting speed and motion. The Japanese text above and below the imagery provides details about the new service, including the October launch date and a route connecting Osaka and Yamada in just under three hours.

Created by Toyonosuke Kurozumi, a prominent designer of transport posters in 1930s Japan, this piece exemplifies the nation’s drive to modernise its railway infrastructure while embracing a forward-thinking design ethos. The 1930s saw rapid industrial growth in Japan, and railways became a symbol of progress, connecting cities and fostering tourism. Kurozumi’s work drew inspiration from European modernist trends, yet retained a distinctly Japanese sensibility in its clean, efficient use of space and bold, harmonious colours.

Osaka Railways

Osaka's railway history began on May 11, 1874, with the inauguration of the first Osaka Station, marking the launch of regular train services between Osaka and Kobe. This initial line was extended to Kyoto in 1876, further solidifying Osaka's role as a pivotal transportation hub in Japan. Over the years, Osaka Station underwent several reconstructions to accommodate the city's growing transit needs, with major rebuilds in 1901, 1940, and 1979. The original Osaka Station was situated in a predominantly rural area of Umeda, surrounded by rice fields, demonstrating the city's foresight in selecting a location that would allow for future expansion and connectivity.
