Australia Tropical North Queensland, Circa 1930s, by Percy Trompf

This vibrant travel poster showcases the lush rainforest of Tropical North Queensland, inviting visitors to experience its warm, idyllic climate. Framed by towering palm trees and dense foliage, the scene captures a sunlit pathway where two elegantly dressed figures walk leisurely, their silhouettes glowing in soft blue. In the foreground, a woman with a parasol adds a touch of charm, while native birds flutter among the leaves. The rich contrast of deep greens, golden sunlight, and the pale silhouettes creates an inviting and exotic atmosphere.

Produced in the 1930s, this poster was part of Australia's early tourism campaigns, designed to attract domestic and international travellers. Tropical North Queensland, with destinations like the Daintree Rainforest and the Great Barrier Reef, was promoted as an untouched paradise, particularly appealing to European visitors seeking adventure and warm winter escapes. The emphasis on travel from April to September aligns with Australia's dry season, when the region's climate is most favourable for exploration.

Percival (Percy) Albert Trompf (1902–1964) was an Australian commercial artist best known for his vibrant travel posters promoting tourism in Australia. Born in Beaufort, Victoria, he showed artistic talent from a young age and went on to study at the Ballarat Technical Art School. Trompf gained prominence in the 1920s and 1930s for his work with the Australian National Travel Association and transport companies like the Victorian Railways. His posters, characterised by bold colours and simplified, eye-catching compositions, played a significant role in shaping Australia’s visual identity in tourism advertising. Trompf also created advertisements for brands such as Bushells Tea and Arnotts Biscuits.
