This striking travel poster presents a sunlit view of the Palais des Papes in Avignon, France, with the Rhône River in the foreground. The composition captures the historic bridge of Saint-Bénézet, partially spanning the water in golden hues, while the palace’s imposing medieval architecture rises behind a cluster of ochre-roofed houses. The scene is bathed in warm, late-afternoon light, enhancing the vibrancy of the orange and yellow tones. Framed by rich blue borders, the image is rendered in Broders’ signature Art Deco style, with simplified forms and bold colour contrasts.
Created in 1922, this poster was part of a campaign by the Paris-Lyon-Méditerranée (PLM) railway to encourage tourism to Avignon, a city renowned for its papal history and Provençal charm. The Palais des Papes, a UNESCO World Heritage site, was the seat of the Catholic papacy in the 14th century and remains one of the most significant Gothic structures in Europe. Roger Broders, one of the most celebrated poster artists of the early 20th century, was known for his elegant and stylised depictions of French leisure destinations.

Natural Pine Frames
Our wooden poster frames are made from durable natural pine wood and come ready to hang. The frames measure 23mm thick by 12mm wide and feature art-quality, shatterproof plexiglass to ensure safe shipping (no glass). Remember to peel off the protective film before you hang!
