À la découverte des cascades du Togo (Discovering the Waterfalls of Togo), 1960s, by Jean Dessirier

This striking modernist poster features two pink flamingos rendered in bold, gestural brushstrokes against a dramatic abstract landscape. The composition is divided into contrasting colour blocks with a deep teal upper section that transitions to white and bright green areas in the lower portion. The primary flamingo stands prominently in the foreground, while a second flamingo is partially visible behind it, creating a sense of depth. Both birds are depicted with minimalist pink and black strokes that capture their distinctive long-necked shapes and elegant postures. The background features expressive black brushstrokes and vibrant lime-green vegetation elements, creating a sense of tropical lushness. At the bottom of the poster, French text reads "à la découverte des cascades du Togo" (discovering the waterfalls of Togo), with the Air Afrique logo prominently displayed beneath it in dark green.

Air Afrique was established in 1960 as a subsidiary of Air France and UAT (Union Aéromaritime de Transport), jointly owned by eleven newly independent former French colonies. The airline served as an important symbol of post-colonial African cooperation and development during a pivotal period when many African nations were establishing their independence. Togo's waterfalls, particularly those in the Kpalimé region, became significant tourist attractions during this era, known for their impressive cascades especially during the rainy season. The natural beauty of these falls, surrounded by lush vegetation, offered visitors opportunities for swimming and enjoying the pristine environment. This poster represents the emerging tourism industry in West Africa during the 1960s, as newly independent nations like Togo sought to showcase their natural wonders to international travellers.

Jean Dessirier created a series of celebrated posters for Air Afrique in the 1960s before later transitioning to sculpture work. Dessirier developed a distinctive artistic style that effectively captured the essence of African landscapes and wildlife through modernist design principles.
