This striking travel poster depicts the dramatic red rock formations of the Calanche de Piana on the west coast of Corsica. Jagged cliffs in deep oranges and reds rise steeply from the Mediterranean, contrasting against the cool blue of the sea and sky. A winding coastal road snakes through the rocky landscape, with a vintage open-top automobile carrying sightseers along the route. The typography at the bottom promotes automobile excursions around Ajaccio, the capital of Corsica, while the framing at the top highlights the connection to the Paris-Lyon-Méditerranée (PLM) railway.
The Calanche de Piana, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is one of Corsica’s most iconic natural landmarks, renowned for its striking geological formations shaped by wind and erosion. In the early 20th century, tourism to Corsica was growing, facilitated by improved rail and road networks. This poster was part of a campaign by the PLM railway company to promote travel to scenic destinations across France, encouraging visitors to explore the island’s rugged beauty by car.
Roger Broders (1883–1953) was a celebrated French graphic artist renowned for his work in travel poster design. Active in the early 20th century, he created numerous advertisements for PLM, promoting French Riviera resorts, Alpine destinations, and scenic rail journeys. His signature style—characterised by bold, flat colours, simplified forms, and dynamic compositions—helped define the Art Deco aesthetic in travel marketing.
