This striking poster presents a stylised green wine bottle at the centre, crowned with a wax-sealed red top and tied with a patriotic tricolour ribbon. It stands against a backdrop of oversized French wildflowers—a red poppy, blue cornflower, and white daisy—symbolising the national colours of France. The dynamic composition is balanced by elegant typography announcing the fifth national wine festival, held in Angers from 3–6 July 1937.
The Fête Nationale des Vins de France was a state-supported initiative to promote regional wine production across the country during the interwar years. Held annually in different wine-growing towns, the 1937 edition in Angers celebrated the Loire Valley’s wine heritage at a time when French agriculture was recovering from the effects of the Great Depression.
Jean Adrien Mercier (1899–1995) was a French illustrator and poster designer known for his bold, clean style and inventive use of symbolic imagery. Born in Angers, where this festival took place, Mercier trained at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris before returning to work in commercial illustration. He designed numerous travel, film and advertising posters, and later became chief illustrator for the Cointreau distillery.
