Air France India, 1963, by Guy Georget
This striking poster showcases Guy Georget's distinctive modernist style with bold, flat colours against a vivid blue background. The composition features stylized green banyan trees on the left, their oval-shaped foliage creating a sense of serene shade. At the centre, two figures are depicted in simplified forms - one draped in a pink garment and another in white - representing traditional Indian dress. To the right stands a golden-yellow temple or structure with stepped architecture, possibly representing a Hindu temple. The poster elegantly balances these elements with the "india" text at the top and "AIR FRANCE" prominently displayed at the bottom in bold yellow letters.
The poster was created during a significant period of expansion for Air France in the early 1960s. By this time, Air France had embraced jet travel with Boeing 707s serving long-haul routes, making distant destinations like India more accessible to French and European tourists. The 1960s marked a golden age for air travel, when flying was still considered luxurious and exotic, and airlines used striking artistic posters to promote international tourism. India, with its rich cultural heritage and spiritual traditions, was being marketed as an exciting destination for the increasingly mobile post-war Western traveller.
Guy Georget (1911-1992) was a highly regarded French commercial artist who created numerous iconic posters for Air France between the late 1940s and 1960s. His distinctive style evolved from more traditional approaches to increasingly graphic, bold compositions with vibrant colours and simplified forms, reflecting mid-century modern aesthetics. Georget's work for Air France formed part of a series promoting various international destinations, each capturing the essence of different countries through symbolic imagery. Beyond his airline work, Georget achieved significant recognition when he designed the official logo for France's postal service "La Poste" in 1960, cementing his legacy as one of France's important graphic designers of the twentieth century.
