This 1936 poster presents a pair of polished brown leather brogues held aloft by a gloved hand, crisply lit against a pale gradient background shifting from white to blue. The shoes, rendered with photographic clarity, are meticulously detailed, their craftsmanship accentuated by dramatic lighting. The gloved hand, tinted in cool blue-grey, adds contrast and a sense of care or presentation. The bold sans-serif "BALLY" at the top anchors the composition, while the phrase bietet mehr ("offers more") curves diagonally at the base.
Designed for Swiss luxury brand Bally, this poster was part of an influential advertising campaign that elevated the company’s image across Europe in the interwar years. Bally, founded in 1851, became a global name in footwear by the 1930s, known for combining technical innovation with fine craftsmanship.
Heinrich Steiner (1906–1983) was a prominent Swiss graphic designer and photographer associated with the Neue Sachlichkeit (New Objectivity) movement. Trained in Zurich, Steiner became known for his striking use of photorealism in commercial design. He was one of several key figures, alongside contemporaries like Herbert Matter, who defined Swiss visual identity during the 1930s and ’40s. Steiner frequently worked for clients such as Bally and Swissair.
