CANDEE, 1929 by Eduardo Garcia Benito

This 1929 poster by Eduardo Garcia Benito advertises Candee's rubber and snow shoes. The image features an elegantly dressed woman in a white coat and matching umbrella, striding confidently through the rain with her small white dog. Her red boots stand out vividly against the muted background of a stately residential street and vintage automobile. The sleek, angular lines and minimalist colour palette are hallmarks of Art Deco, a style Benito mastered during his career as an illustrator and poster artist.

Candee was an American company founded in 1842, among the earliest manufacturers of rubber footwear. By the late 19th and early 20th centuries, it had gained prominence as a leading supplier of durable yet fashionable boots and shoes. Benito, a Spanish-born artist celebrated for his contributions to Vogue and other high-fashion publications, captured the intersection of practicality and glamour, making this poster a striking example of Art Deco’s influence on commercial advertising. The poster embodies the modernity and refinement associated with the late 1920s, an era when functional goods were marketed with an aspirational, luxurious appeal.
