Gstaad, 1930, by an Unknown Artist

This vintage ski poster from 1930 depicts a thrilling downhill ski race in the Swiss Alps near Gstaad. The dynamic composition shows three skiers navigating a steep slope, their silhouettes sharply contrasted against the soft blues and whites of the snowy landscape. Stylised evergreen trees frame the scene, while a red flag signals the course's path. In the background, the jagged alpine peaks rise dramatically, tinged with a faint red glow.

During the 1930s, Gstaad was transitioning from a modest agricultural community to a renowned resort town. The construction of the Montreux–Lenk im Simmental railway line in 1905 had made the region more accessible, leading to the development of hotels and ski facilities. The Gstaad Palace, opened in 1913, became a symbol of luxury and attracted an international clientele. Despite the challenges of the Great Depression, Gstaad continued to develop its tourism infrastructure, laying the foundation for its status as a destination for the elite.

The 1930s also saw the establishment of ski clubs and schools, fostering a culture of winter sports that would become integral to Gstaad's identity. The village's commitment to preserving its traditional chalet architecture, combined with the natural beauty of the Swiss Alps, contributed to its enduring appeal.

We've carefully remastered this print to make it available for you to enjoy. Our restoration process is detailed and precise but, because this artwork was never created digitally and no original digital file exists, some slight imperfections may remain when viewed up close, including some slightly blurred edges.
