Jungfrau Bahn, 1928, by Emil Cardinaux

This poster presents a dramatic alpine panorama of the Aletsch Glacier and surrounding Bernese Alps. A group of skiers in yellow jackets advances along a snowy ridge, their tall skis silhouetted against the icy expanse. The palette is dominated by whites, ochres, and cool blues, with strong black outlines and a commanding sense of scale.

The Jungfrau is one of Switzerland’s most iconic peaks, its name meaning “maiden” or “virgin” in German. This reflects its place within a trio of mountains mythologised in Swiss folklore: the Jungfrau, the Mönch (monk), and the Eiger (ogre). The Jungfraubahn, completed in 1912, was a major engineering feat, carrying visitors to Europe’s highest railway station at 3,454 metres.

Emil Cardinaux (1877–1936) is widely regarded as the father of Swiss poster art. Originally trained as a painter, he brought a bold, graphic sensibility to travel advertising, pioneering the use of flat colour and striking composition. A committed mountaineer himself, Cardinaux imbued his alpine scenes with both grandeur and clarity.

We've carefully remastered this print to make it available for you to enjoy. Our restoration process is detailed and precise but, because this artwork was never created digitally and no original digital file exists, some slight imperfections may remain when viewed up close, including some slightly blurred edges. To preserve its quality, we only offer it in sizes up to A2. Please do check the final product photo carefully and ensure you're happy before purchasing.
