Menton, la Perle de la France, 1926, by James C. Richard

This richly coloured poster presents a lush, almost tropical foreground framing a sweeping view of Menton, a coastal town on the French Riviera. Bananas, lemons, succulents and flowering plants cluster around the edges of the composition, emphasising the region’s famed botanical abundance. Below, the town curves along the Mediterranean shoreline, its ochre rooftops and church tower basking in golden light, with the foothills of the Alps rising behind.

The slogan, quoting the 19th-century geographer Élisée Reclus, refers to Menton as la perle de la France—“the pearl of France.” The town earned this reputation for its mild microclimate, which made it a popular winter retreat for Europeans seeking warmth and sun, particularly during the Belle Époque and interwar years. In the 1920s, Menton marketed itself heavily through tourism posters as an exotic yet accessible destination, with citrus orchards, elegant promenades, and gardens inspired by the region's subtropical flora.

James C. Richard unfortunately remains a relatively obscure figure, with little surviving documentation about his life or artistic output. Based in Menton during the 1920s, he is known primarily for a small number of highly stylised travel posters, of which this is the best known.

We've carefully remastered this print to make it available for you to enjoy. Our restoration process is detailed and precise but, because this artwork was never created digitally and no original digital file exists, some slight imperfections may remain when viewed up close, including some slightly blurred edges. To preserve its quality, we only offer it in sizes up to A2. Please do check the final product photo carefully and ensure you're happy before purchasing.
