Santa Fe Railroad – Navajo Land, Arizona–New Mexico, circa 1950, by Willard Frederic Elms

This circa 1950 poster by American artist Willard Frederic Elms was commissioned by the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway to promote tourism to the Navajo lands of Arizona and New Mexico. The artwork features a stylized depiction of Monument Valley's iconic sandstone formations bathed in warm hues of orange and red. In the foreground, a Navajo figure on horseback traverses the rugged landscape, while traditional dwellings and a flock of sheep are visible in the distance.

During the mid-20th century, the Santa Fe Railway played a pivotal role in promoting Southwestern tourism, capitalizing on the public's growing interest in Native American culture and the natural wonders of the region. Collaborating with artists like Elms, the railway produced vibrant posters that romanticized the landscape and indigenous heritage, enticing travellers to experience the "untouched" American frontier.

Willard Frederic Elms (1900–1956) was an American artist known for his commercial illustrations and contributions to travel advertising. Educated at the Art Institute of Chicago, Elms developed a distinctive style characterized by bold colours and simplified forms, aligning with the Mid-Century Modernist movement.
