Pau, Grand Prix Automobile, 21 February 1937, by Scot

This striking 1937 poster by the artist Scot captures the energy and speed of the Pau Grand Prix. A streamlined blue race car, marked with the number "2," dominates the foreground as it leans into a dramatic curve, its wheels appearing to blur with movement. Behind it, a smaller red race car with the number "1" can be seen. The background features angular, stylised mountains and a curved racetrack, rendered in vibrant orange and cream tones. The bold typography announcing "PAU" and "Grand Prix Automobile" anchors the composition in the top right corner, while the event date, "21 Février 1937," is displayed at the bottom.

The Pau Grand Prix, held in the city of Pau in southwestern France, is one of the most historic motor racing events in Europe. The 1937 race, part of the pre-war Grand Prix era, featured legendary drivers and marked a golden age for motorsport. Scot, the artist of this poster, used bold colour schemes and simplified forms to convey motion and excitement.

1937 Pau Grand Prix

The 1937 Pau Grand Prix was held on February 21 in Pau, France. The race took place on the challenging 2.76 km (1.72 miles) temporary street circuit, renowned for its demanding layout through the town's streets. Jean-Pierre Wimille secured victory in his Bugatti T59S, completing the 80-lap race in 2 hours, 41 minutes, and 15 seconds. Raymond Sommer, driving a Talbot-Lago T150C, finished second, one lap behind Wimille, while René Dreyfus claimed third place in a Delahaye 135C. This edition of the Pau Grand Prix was distinctive as it was run under sports car regulations, with Grand Prix cars restricted to 4,500 cc engines. Wimille's performance was particularly impressive, as he consistently lapped three to four seconds faster than his competitors.
