The S.S. America was launched in 1939 and served as a symbol of American maritime prowess in the mid-20th century. During World War II, the vessel was requisitioned by the U.S. Navy and renamed the USS West Point, transporting troops across the Atlantic. Post-war, it returned to commercial service, offering transatlantic voyages that epitomized luxury and modernity.
Lester Beall (1903–1969) was a pioneering figure in American graphic design, renowned for his innovative and modernist approach. Born in Kansas City, Missouri, Beall moved to Chicago, where he studied art history at the University of Chicago. He later established his career in New York, gaining prominence through his work for clients such as the Rural Electrification Administration and the Chicago Tribune. Beall's designs are characterized by their clarity, bold use of colour, and incorporation of European avant-garde influences.
