The Chambers Brothers at The Matrix, 1967, by Victor Moscoso

This 1967 poster by Spanish-American artist Victor Moscoso advertises performances by The Chambers Brothers at The Matrix club in San Francisco. The design features a vibrant close-up of a woman's face adorned with oversized sunglasses. The lenses contain distorted, wavy blue text detailing the event, set against a vivid orange and pink background.

During the late 1960s, San Francisco was a hub for countercultural movements, with music venues like The Matrix serving as focal points for emerging artists. The Chambers Brothers, known for blending gospel, blues, and psychedelic rock, gained prominence during this era. Moscoso's poster was part of the "Neon Rose" series, a collection of concert posters that became iconic representations of the psychedelic art movement.

Victor Moscoso, born in 1936 in Vilaboa, Spain, moved to the United States at a young age. He studied art at Cooper Union in New York City and Yale University under the renowned artist Josef Albers. In 1959, Moscoso relocated to San Francisco, where he became a key figure in the psychedelic art scene. He was among the first to incorporate photographic collage into rock posters and was known for his innovative use of vibrating colours and illegible lettering. Beyond poster art, Moscoso contributed to underground comix, notably "Zap Comix," and received multiple awards for his contributions to graphic design and illustration.
