USS Nautilus – General Dynamics, 1955, by Erik Nitsche
This 1955 poster by Swiss-born graphic designer Erik Nitsche features a stylised depiction of the USS Nautilus, the world's first operational nuclear-powered submarine. The design integrates a nautilus shell, symbolising the vessel's namesake, with the submarine emerging from its spiral.
Commissioned by General Dynamics, this poster was part of a series created for the International Conference on the Peaceful Uses of Atomic Energy held in Geneva in 1955. The USS Nautilus, launched in 1954, marked a significant milestone in naval engineering as the first submarine capable of sustained submerged operations powered by nuclear propulsion. Due to the classified nature of the submarine's design, Nitsche was not provided with detailed schematics, prompting him to employ abstract symbolism to convey the essence of the vessel and its ground-breaking technology.
Erik Nitsche (1908–1998) was a pioneering graphic designer known for his contributions to industrial and corporate design. Born in Lausanne, Switzerland, he studied at the Collège Classique of Lausanne and the Kunstgewerbeschule in Munich before emigrating to the United States in 1934. Throughout his career, Nitsche emphasised clarity, precision, and the use of geometric forms in his work. His tenure as art director for General Dynamics from 1955 to 1960 resulted in a cohesive visual identity for the company, including the acclaimed "Atoms for Peace" series.
