This 1945 exhibition brochure, designed by Marcel Duchamp for Man Ray's exhibition at the Julien Levy Gallery, uses polka dots to form a subtle and abstract image of an African American couple about to kiss. The interplay of positive and negative space creates a dynamic yet understated representation of intimacy and connection. The choice of a minimal palette and fragmented forms reflects Duchamp's conceptual approach, inviting viewers to interpret the image beyond its surface simplicity.
The subject matter, while seemingly straightforward, carries a deeper resonance in the context of 1940s America, where depictions of African American figures in art remained rare. Natural Pine Frames
Our wooden poster frames are made from durable natural pine wood and come ready to hang. The frames measure 23mm thick by 12mm wide and feature art-quality, shatterproof plexiglass to ensure safe shipping (no glass). Remember to peel off the protective film before you hang!
