L'habitation, 1938, by Géo Lecomte

This minimalist Art Deco poster advertises the 5th Exposition de l'Habitation, held at the Grand Palais in Paris from 27 January to 13 February 1938. The composition features a modernist house rendered in simplified geometric forms, with a bold red line tracing the outline of a traditional pitched roof, visually merging the past with the present. Soft gradient greys suggest depth and atmosphere, while two stylised white clouds float across the muted sky.

The exhibition was part of the XV Salon des Arts Ménagers (15th Salon of Household Arts), a major annual event promoting modern living, domestic innovation, and rational design in pre-war France. Organised by the Ministry of Education and the Office National des Recherches et Inventions, the 1938 edition focused on architecture's role in everyday life and the potential of modern housing to improve living standards. The show included models, blueprints, and displays from architects and industrial designers, reflecting growing interest in functionalism and the influence of movements like the Bauhaus.

The poster is signed "Géo. Lecomte" along the left side, likely referring to Georges Lecomte, a French designer active in the interwar period.
