Bermuda - Fly Pan American, c.1950s, Designer Unknown

This poster promotes Pan American Airlines’ routes to Bermuda, featuring a scene of sleek white yachts sailing through calm blue waters. The design highlights the island’s coastal landscape with simple, clean lines, and pastel tones that suggest a tranquil and picturesque destination. The bright yellow lettering and bold typography emphasise Bermuda as a key destination for travellers in the post-war era.

Bermuda became a significant destination for international tourism during the mid-20th century, supported by airlines like Pan Am, which connected the island to the United States and beyond. Known for its distinctive pink sand beaches and British colonial architecture, Bermuda catered to the rising demand for leisure travel among affluent customers. Pan Am, often referred to as "the world’s most experienced airline," played a pivotal role in shaping global tourism during this period, using posters like this to entice travellers with promises of exotic and easily accessible destinations.

1950s Bermuda

In the 1950s, Bermuda, a British Overseas Territory ruled by a governor appointed by the British Crown, had a population of around 42,000. This period marked significant military and cultural transitions, as the Royal Naval Dockyard, a strategic base for the British Navy, was downsized in 1951 and closed by 1958, while the British Army withdrew its garrison entirely by 1957. Bermuda was becoming more civilian-focused, with tourism booming as visitors flocked to its pink sand beaches, luxury hotels, and recreational activities like golf and waterskiing. Bermuda shorts, originally adapted from British military attire for the island's subtropical climate, gained popularity as both casual and formal wear, cementing their place in island culture. Despite its idyllic appeal, Bermuda was grappling with racial segregation and inequality, which grassroots civil rights movements began challenging, laying the foundation for social change in the decades to come.
