Uruguay, XIV Campeonato Sudamericano de Football, 1942, by J. Bonelli

This striking 1942 poster by J. Bonelli promotes the 14th South American Football Championship, held in Montevideo, Uruguay. The design features a stylised goalkeeper in a vibrant red jersey, cradling a leather football against a backdrop of a goal net, rendered in a minimalist Art Deco style. The bold typography above reads "Uruguay Turismo 1942," with "XIV Campeonato Sudamericano de Football" prominently displayed below, highlighting the event's significance.

The 1942 South American Championship, now known as the Copa América, was a pivotal event in Uruguay's rich football history. Held from January 10 to February 7, the tournament showcased the nation's passion for the sport and its commitment to promoting tourism through such events. Bonelli's poster not only served as an advertisement but also as a piece of art that captured the era's aesthetic and the cultural importance of football in Uruguay.

The tournament featured seven teams: Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Ecuador, Paraguay, Peru, and the host nation, Uruguay. Uruguay dominated the championship, winning all six of their matches to secure their eighth title. They conceded just two goals throughout the competition, showcasing their defensive strength. A notable moment from the tournament was Argentina's historic 12–0 victory over Ecuador, which remains the largest winning margin in Copa América history.
