Light – Rural Electrification Administration, 1937, by Lester Beall
This 1937 poster by Lester Beall, titled "Light," was part of a series created for the Rural Electrification Administration (REA) to promote the benefits of electricity in rural America. The design features a large, stylized light bulb dominating the composition, symbolizing the introduction of electric power. In the background, a farmhouse is depicted with illuminated windows, set against a backdrop of bold red and blue geometric shapes. The word "Light" is prominently displayed.
During the 1930s, many rural areas in the United States lacked access to electricity, hindering economic development and quality of life. The REA, established under President Franklin D. Roosevelt's New Deal, aimed to electrify these regions. Beall's modernist poster used simple yet powerful imagery to communicate the transformative impact of electricity.
Lester Beall (1903–1969) was an American graphic designer known for his innovative approach that blended European modernism with American visual culture. Born in Kansas City, Missouri, Beall was largely self-taught in graphic design. He gained prominence for his clear and concise use of typography and bold primary colours, creating a distinctive style that became easily recognizable.

Natural Pine Frames
Our wooden poster frames are made from durable natural pine wood and come ready to hang. The frames measure 23mm thick by 12mm wide and feature art-quality, shatterproof plexiglass to ensure safe shipping (no glass). Remember to peel off the protective film before you hang!
