MIT Black Student Union, circa 1970, by Jacqueline S. Casey and Dietmar Winkler

This poster, designed for the MIT Black Student Union (BSU), uses bold typography and a structured layout to communicate its message. The repeated "mit bsu" text dominates the composition, with "mit" in black and "bsu" in blue, reinforcing the institution and its Black Student Union. The minimal yet effective design is balanced by small blocks of text in the upper and right sections, providing information about graduate programs and MIT’s commitment to diversity. The contrast between large, heavy typography and white space reflects the precision and clarity associated with Swiss-inspired modernist design.

Created during the late 1960s or early 1970s, this poster aligns with a period of increasing activism and advocacy for racial equality in higher education. The MIT Black Student Union was established amid the civil rights movement, as universities across the U.S. faced demands for more representation and support for Black students. The poster highlights MIT’s awareness of these concerns, emphasizing financial aid, admissions, and career support for prospective Black graduate students.

Jacqueline S. Casey (1927–1992) was a pioneering graphic designer and a key figure in MIT’s Design Services Office. Influenced by Swiss design principles, she used bold typography, asymmetry, and simplicity to create striking visual identities for the institution. Dietmar Winkler, a fellow MIT designer, collaborated on many projects advocating for clarity in communication through structured design.
