One-Man Show, 1968, by Kazumasa Nagai

This 1968 poster by Kazumasa Nagai is a striking example of optical and geometric design. It features undulating black lines that ripple across the composition, creating the illusion of a three-dimensional, flowing surface. The colours transition from deep red at the bottom to orange, yellow, green, and finally to blue at the top. The dynamic, wave-like pattern dominates the design, with Japanese text integrated at the top to announce Nagai's solo exhibition.

Kazumasa Nagai, a renowned Japanese graphic designer born in 1929, became internationally acclaimed for his innovative use of abstract forms and colour. During the 1960s, Japan was experiencing a cultural transformation, with modernist design gaining prominence in both art and advertising. Nagai’s work often merged traditional Japanese sensibilities with contemporary design techniques, as seen in this piece. This poster was created for his solo exhibition at Ichibankan Gallery.
