CYRK Tiger, 1971, by Wiktor Górka
The poster depicts a stylised orange tiger with rhythmic black stripes creating a dynamic, hypnotic pattern across its body. Set against a stark black background, the tiger appears to be roaring fiercely, showing white pointed teeth in its wide-open mouth. The animal has distinctive green rectangular eyes that give it an intense, watchful appearance. The tiger stands poised with its paws resting on a teal-coloured circular platform, which contains the word "CYRK" (Polish for "circus") in matching orange lettering. The overall design is bold and graphic, using minimal colours and strong geometric forms to create a striking, eye-catching image that masterfully balances playfulness with a sense of controlled power.
This poster is part of the celebrated Polish circus poster tradition that began in 1962 when the ZPR (Zjednoczone Przedsiębiorstwa Rozrywkowe, or United Entertainment Enterprises), the state agency overseeing circus activities in communist Poland, commissioned leading graphic artists to create promotional materials. Rather than advertising specific performances, these posters were designed to capture the essence and atmosphere of the circus through artistic expression. The Polish School of Posters became internationally renowned for their distinctive style, combining rich metaphorical imagery, vibrant colours, and often subtle political commentary disguised within seemingly innocent circus themes. These posters adorned wooden fences throughout Polish cities during the 1960s-1980s and have since become highly collectible artworks that represent a unique period in graphic design history.
Wiktor Górka (1922-2004) was one of the most celebrated figures of the Second Generation of the Polish School of Posters. After graduating with honours from the Academy of Fine Arts in Kraków in 1952, he established himself as a master poster artist, working for Poland's largest publishing houses and film distributors. His distinctive style featured clean, contemporary lines, bold geometric forms, and striking colour combinations that created immediate visual impact. Beyond his famous circus posters, Górka created iconic designs for films including "Cabaret" and "The Great Escape," as well as tourism campaigns promoting Poland abroad.
