Arizona, 1950s, by Fred Ludekens

This vibrant mid-century poster by Fred Ludekens was created for American Airlines to promote Arizona as a travel destination. It depicts a romanticised Southwestern scene, with two horseback riders in traditional cowboy attire framed by a towering saguaro cactus against a bold yellow backdrop. The architecture of a Spanish colonial-style mission appears in the distance, with purple-hued mountains on the horizon. Above, a sleek American Airlines plane soars, connecting the historic desert landscape to the modernity of air travel

Fred Ludekens (1900–1982) was an American artist and illustrator known for his work in advertising and magazine illustration. Born in Hueneme, California, he began his career as a billboard painter and later became an art director for major advertising agencies. Ludekens was also a founding faculty member of the Famous Artists School.

In the 1950s, Arizona experienced significant growth and development. The post-war economic boom led to increased tourism, with visitors drawn to the state's warm climate, scenic landscapes, and attractions like the Grand Canyon. This era also saw the expansion of infrastructure, including highways and air travel, making destinations like Arizona more accessible to the broader public.

We've carefully remastered this print to make it available for you to enjoy. Our restoration process is detailed and precise but, because this artwork was never created digitally and no original digital file exists, some slight imperfections may remain when viewed up close, including some slightly blurred edges. To preserve its quality, we only offer it in sizes up to A2. Please do check the final product photo carefully and ensure you're happy before purchasing.
