Basketball – Munich 1972, by Otl Aicher

This vibrant poster, designed for the 1972 Munich Olympics, captures a dynamic moment in a basketball game. The illustration, rendered in a distinctive halftone style, shows four players mid-action, reaching for the ball under the hoop. The composition is set against a striking orange background, with figures depicted in blue and yellow, emphasizing movement and energy.

The 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich were known for their bold and cohesive graphic identity, created under the direction of German designer Otl Aicher. The games sought to present a progressive and optimistic image of Germany, contrasting with the nation's past. Basketball at the 1972 Olympics became particularly famous due to the controversial final between the United States and the Soviet Union, in which the Soviet team claimed victory in a dramatic and disputed finish. The Munich Games were also overshadowed by the tragic Munich Massacre, making them one of the most historically significant Olympics.

Otl Aicher (1922–1991) was a pioneering German graphic designer, best known for his work on the Munich Olympics’ visual identity. His approach emphasized clarity, minimalism, and functionality, heavily influenced by the Bauhaus movement. Aicher developed the now-iconic pictogram system used for Olympic sports, which became a standard for future games. His design work extended beyond sports, including corporate identities for Lufthansa and the signage system for the Frankfurt Airport.
