Camicia Nera, 1933, by Guglielmo Sansoni Tato

This dynamic and vivid poster depicts a mass of marching figures clad in black shirts, a reference to the Italian Fascist movement’s paramilitary uniform. The figures are arranged in sharp geometric forms, their black shirts contrasting with a backdrop of bold yellow hills, red diagonal structures, and a bright blue sky. The composition's angularity and saturated colours evoke a sense of movement and power, with the repetitive lines and intersecting forms suggesting collective action. The title “Camicia Nera” (“Black Shirt”) prominently crowns the poster, emphasizing its propagandistic nature.

Guglielmo Sansoni, known by the pseudonym Tato, was an influential figure in the Italian Futurist movement, which celebrated modernity, speed, and mechanisation. Tato’s work often aligned with the aesthetics and ideology of the Fascist regime, blending avant-garde styles with state propaganda. This 1933 poster reflects Futurism’s fascination with industrial dynamism and mass unity, harnessed here to glorify the Fascist ethos.
