Campari 3, 1920s, by Fortunato Depero

This dynamic poster features an angular, abstract figure composed of geometric shapes in a deep, terracotta red hue. The character is playful and energetic, with expressive, triangular limbs and a heart-like shape at its centre. Bold typography spells out “Cordial Campari Liquor” in curved, modernist letters, reinforcing the Futurist aesthetic. Depero’s signature, accompanied by "Rovereto" (his hometown), is prominently displayed.

Fortunato Depero, a leading figure of the Italian Futurist movement, collaborated extensively with the Campari brand during the 1920s and 1930s, shaping its visual identity with innovative designs. Campari is an Italian alcoholic liqueur renowned for its bright red colour and distinctive bitter flavour. It is made by infusing alcohol and water with a blend of herbs, spices, and fruits, although the exact recipe remains a closely guarded secret. Originally created in 1860 by Gaspare Campari in Novara, Italy, it has since become a staple ingredient in classic cocktails such as the Negroni and the Americano.

Fortunato Depero

Fortunato Depero (1892–1960) was an influential Italian artist, designer, and key figure in the Futurist movement. Born in Fondo, Italy, he initially trained as a painter before embracing Futurism in 1913 after encountering the movement’s founders. Depero became renowned for his avant-garde experiments in typography, advertising, and stage design, as well as his iconic geometric and mechanised aesthetic. He revolutionised advertising, notably designing the iconic Campari Soda bottle, which remains in production today. In the late 1920s, he took Futurism to New York, creating theatre sets and commercial artworks, but later returned to Italy, where his work continued to shape modern graphic design.
