Cesar, 1939, by A.M. Cassandre

This poster features a strikingly detailed hand holding a lit cigar against a gradient backdrop of turquoise and yellow, embodying Cassandre’s mastery of bold simplicity. The carefully rendered textures of the hand and cigar contrast with the geometric typography of “CESAR” and the sleek, modernist design elements below.

Created in 1939, this poster advertises Vautier’s César cigars, reflecting the interwar period’s blend of luxury and industrial design. A.M. Cassandre, renowned for his Art Deco aesthetic, brought sophistication to commercial art by combining fine art principles with mass appeal. His work captured the optimism and modernity of the era, with this piece epitomising the glamour of leisure and smoking culture at the time.

We've carefully remastered this print to make it available for you to enjoy. Our restoration process is detailed and precise but, because this artwork was never created digitally and no original digital file exists, some slight imperfections may remain when viewed up close, including some slightly blurred edges. To preserve its quality, we only offer it in sizes up to A2. Please do check the final product photo carefully and ensure you're happy before purchasing.

A.M. Cassandre

A.M. Cassandre (1901–1968), born Adolphe Jean-Marie Mouron in Kharkiv, Ukraine, was a French-American artist and graphic designer celebrated for his influential contributions to 20th-century commercial art and typography. Educated at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, Cassandre rose to prominence in the 1920s and 1930s with his striking Art Deco-inspired posters, which combined bold geometric forms, innovative typography, and dynamic compositions. He also designed typefaces, including the renowned Peignot, which reflected his modernist sensibilities. Cassandre's work bridged fine art and advertising, and he became a sought-after designer for luxury brands and theatre sets. His achievements include receiving the Grand Prix at the 1925 International Exposition of Modern Decorative and Industrial Arts in Paris.
