Chamonix Mont Blanc, 1921, by Geo Dorival (1879–1968)

This poster presents a stunning depiction of the Mont Blanc massif, rising majestically above a tranquil alpine scene. In the foreground, fiery orange birch trees frame a reflective lake, while lush greenery and dense conifers stretch across the base of the mountains. The soft blue sky contrasts vividly with the white snowcaps, emphasising the grandeur of the peaks. The scene exudes the serenity and timeless beauty of the Chamonix valley, an area renowned for its appeal to nature lovers and adventurers.

Geo Dorival was a French artist and poster designer celebrated for his travel advertising posters, particularly those commissioned by railway companies. His work often highlighted the scenic beauty of France's regions, enticing tourists to explore by train. This 1921 piece was created during the golden age of poster art, a time when vibrant lithography revolutionised advertising. Chamonix, a key destination for skiing and mountaineering, was a focal point of early 20th-century alpine tourism.

1920s Chamonix

In the 1920s, Chamonix, nestled beneath Mont Blanc, emerged as a premier destination for winter sports enthusiasts. The town's international acclaim was solidified when it hosted the inaugural Winter Olympic Games in 1924, an event that attracted 258 athletes from 16 nations competing in 16 events across five sports. This milestone not only showcased Chamonix's natural allure but also spurred the development of essential infrastructure, including the construction of the first cable car in the valley in 1924, enhancing access to the surrounding peaks. The decade also witnessed the establishment of the Planpraz cable car in 1927, further cementing Chamonix's reputation as a hub for alpine adventure. These advancements transformed the town from a summer mountaineering retreat into a year-round resort, laying the foundation for its enduring legacy in winter tourism.
