Chamonix-Mont-Blanc, by Tairraz, published by E. Desfosses-Neogravure, Paris

This vintage travel poster, likely from the 1950s or 1960s, showcases a stunning black-and-white photograph of the Mont Blanc massif towering above the Chamonix valley. A solitary skier stands in the foreground, gazing out over the dramatic peaks. The crisp monochrome tones highlight the rugged textures of the snow-covered mountains.

The photograph is attributed to the Tairraz family, celebrated pioneers of mountain photography in Chamonix. Beginning with Joseph Tairraz in the mid-19th century, the family’s work has documented the evolution of mountaineering and the stunning landscapes of the French Alps. This poster was originally published by E. Desfosses-Neogravure, a renowned Parisian printing house known for its contributions to mid-20th-century tourism promotion.

Behind the art

The Tairraz Family

The Tairraz family of Chamonix, France, established a remarkable legacy as mountain photographers spanning four generations. It began with Joseph Tairraz in 1857, who, after acquiring a daguerreotype in Geneva, captured some of the earliest images of the Mont Blanc massif. His son, Georges Tairraz (1868–1924), continued this passion, becoming renowned for his portrayal of the Alps. The tradition was furthered by Georges Tairraz II, a third-generation alpinist who was also a talented photographer, director, and cinematographer. The family's work evolved with technological advancements, transitioning from early daguerreotypes to large-format cameras, and eventually embracing colour photography and aerial perspectives.
