Edinburgh, circa 1954, by Claude Buckle (1905–1973)

This poster depicts the iconic Scott Monument in Edinburgh, a towering Gothic structure dedicated to the Scottish author Sir Walter Scott. The monument, bathed in warm sunlight, dominates the scene with its intricate spires and arches, surrounded by lush greenery from Princes Street Gardens. In the background, the cityscape stretches into the distance, framed by a pastel blue sky scattered with soft clouds. The composition conveys a sense of calm and grandeur, inviting viewers to explore the historic city.

Claude Buckle, an accomplished artist known for his railway posters, played a significant role in promoting British travel during the mid-20th century. His style combined architectural precision with atmospheric charm, capturing the essence of each location. This piece was commissioned by British Railways as part of a campaign encouraging train travel to scenic and historic destinations across the UK. The Scott Monument, completed in 1844, embodies Edinburgh's literary and architectural heritage, making it an apt subject for Buckle's romantic yet structured approach to poster art.

Claude Buckle

Claude Buckle (1905–1973) was a British artist and commercial illustrator best known for his evocative railway posters and watercolour paintings. Born in London, Buckle trained as an architect, which influenced his precise and structured compositions. His career flourished during the golden age of railway posters in the 1930s and 1940s, when he produced striking travel advertisements for the Great Western Railway (GWR) and later British Railways, showcasing idyllic landscapes and cityscapes that encouraged tourism across Britain. Beyond posters, Buckle was a talented watercolourist, earning recognition from the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours. Interestingly, despite his success as a commercial artist, he turned to fine art in his later years, producing detailed paintings of historical and architectural subjects, reflecting his early architectural training.
