France Chamonix, 1970s, Artist Unknown

This vibrant poster showcases the snowy peaks of Chamonix-Mont-Blanc, with its dramatic alpine vistas framed by a strikingly clear blue sky. In the foreground, bright yellow, red, green, and blue gondolas of the Flégère cable car system ascend over a pristine ski slope. Below, skiers and snowboarders traverse the snow, adding a sense of scale and energy to the breathtaking mountain scene. The lower portion of the poster features bold typography, with the text "Sports d'hiver en France" ("Winter Sports in France").

Chamonix, one of the oldest and most famous ski resorts in the world, has long been a symbol of alpine adventure and elegance. Located in the French Alps near the borders of Switzerland and Italy, it hosted the first Winter Olympics in 1924. The cable cars depicted were essential to developing the region’s reputation, making the challenging terrain accessible to visitors.

We've carefully remastered this print to make it available for you to enjoy. Our restoration process is detailed and precise but, because this artwork was never created digitally and no original digital file exists, some slight imperfections may remain when viewed up close, including some slightly blurred edges. To preserve its quality, we only offer it in sizes up to A2. Please do check the final product photo carefully and ensure you're happy before purchasing.

Behind the art

1970s Chamonix

In the 1970s, Chamonix saw the introduction of high-speed detachable chairlifts and larger gondolas, enhancing the capacity and comfort of its lift systems. This period also marked the rise of alpine walking, with improved accessibility due to increased car ownership and the updating of old refuges to accommodate the growing number of visitors. In 1976, the French Army established the High Mountain Military Group (Groupe Militaire de Haute Montagne) in Chamonix, composed of ten expert mountaineers tasked with conducting high-altitude expeditions and research. Additionally, the Chamonix Hockey Club dominated French ice hockey during this era, securing multiple national championships.
