Lawrence Arthur Exhibition, 1971

This minimalist poster for a 1971 exhibition at the Bluecoat Gallery in Liverpool employs a bold geometric design in monochrome. The image features overlapping rectangles and squares composed of diagonal black and white lines, creating an optical illusion of depth and shifting light. The stark contrast and clean lines draw the viewer’s eye to the dynamic abstract shapes, which seem to vibrate against the plain white background.

The Bluecoat Gallery, located in the historic Bluecoat Chambers, is one of the oldest arts centres in the UK and a vital part of Liverpool’s cultural landscape. The 1970s saw an increase in exhibitions that highlighted modern and abstract art, reflecting broader shifts in post-war European art movements such as Op Art and Minimalism. While information about Lawrence Arthur is limited, this poster’s use of geometric abstraction aligns with the trends of the era, influenced by artists like Bridget Riley and Victor Vasarely.

We've carefully remastered this print to make it available for you to enjoy. The Bluecoat Gallery

The Bluecoat, located in Liverpool's city centre, is the city's oldest surviving building, constructed between 1717 and 1718. Originally established as a charity school, it transitioned into an arts centre in the early 20th century. Notably, in 1911, it hosted an exhibition featuring works by Picasso, Matisse, Cézanne, and Van Gogh—the first time these artists were showcased in the UK outside London. Over the years, the Bluecoat has welcomed influential figures such as composer Igor Stravinsky and artist Yoko Ono, who performed there in 1967 before meeting John Lennon.
