Sainte-Maxime, 1929, by Roger Broders

This poster depicts a vibrant coastal scene on the Côte d’Azur, framed by the bold silhouette of a palm tree in the foreground. Colourful sailing boats with angular, geometric sails rest on the serene blue waters, contrasting with the ochre and cream tones of a village nestled in the rolling green hills. The sky is a soft, understated grey, allowing the bold shapes and colours of the composition to stand out.

Created in 1929, this piece captures the interwar fascination with Mediterranean resorts, as places like Sainte-Maxime became increasingly accessible due to advancements in rail and automobile travel. Roger Broders, renowned for his travel posters promoting French destinations, worked frequently with the Paris-Lyon-Méditerranée (PLM) railway company.

Behind the art

1920s Sainte-Maxime

In the 1920s, Sainte-Maxime experienced significant growth, transforming from a quaint village into a vibrant cultural hub. The town became a haven for artists and writers, including French novelist Victor Margueritte, who, around 1920, acquired and developed the expansive La Madrague property, residing there with his wife until 1938. This period also saw a surge in architectural development, with numerous villas constructed, many designed by the town's emblematic architect, René Darde. Additionally, Sainte-Maxime's allure attracted notable figures such as Jean de Brunhoff, creator of the Babar books, who found inspiration in the town's serene environment. One of the beaches, La Plage des Eléphants, is named in honor of his famous elephant character.
