Suisse, 1914, by Emil Cardinaux
This travel poster presents a striking view of the Swiss Alps, featuring the electrified railway line of the St. Gotthard region. A winding railway track curves through the mountainous landscape, emerging from a tunnel on the left and descending into the valley. A small village with traditional alpine houses, including a prominent church on a hill, is nestled between the towering peaks. The composition is defined by bold colours—green pastures, blue-shadowed mountains, and white snowcaps—creating a dynamic contrast that highlights the grandeur of the Swiss landscape.
The St. Gotthard railway is one of Switzerland’s most significant transport routes, connecting northern and southern Europe through the Alps. By 1920, the line was fully electrified, making it one of the earliest large-scale electrification projects in railway history.
Emil Cardinaux (1877–1936) was a Swiss painter and graphic designer best known for pioneering the Swiss travel poster. Trained at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich, he brought a painterly quality to poster design, incorporating strong colour contrasts and simplified forms. His 1908 Matterhorn poster for the Zermatt railway is considered one of the first modern Swiss travel posters. Cardinaux’s style blended elements of Art Nouveau with a distinctly Swiss aesthetic.
We've carefully remastered this print to make it available for you to enjoy. Our restoration process is detailed and precise but, because this artwork was never created digitally and no original digital file exists, some slight imperfections may remain when viewed up close, including some slightly blurred edges.
