Tentoonstelling, 1927, by Paul Schuitema

This bold, geometric poster features a monumental number "13" in white, set against a stark black background. Diagonal orange lettering spelling "TENTOONSTELLING" (meaning "exhibition") cuts across the number in a dynamic, forward-moving design. The top and bottom text, in orange sans-serif type, conveys essential details about the exhibition, including dates ("Van 25 T.M. 31 Dec. Van 10-4") and the venue, "Coolsingel 72," with free entry highlighted. The juxtaposition of clean typography and striking colour blocks reflects the influence of modernist design principles of the 1920s.

Paul Schuitema was a pioneering figure in the Dutch De Stijl and Constructivist movements, known for integrating typography and design into a cohesive whole. As a graphic designer, photographer, and filmmaker, Schuitema emphasised functionality and clarity, which aligned with the industrial and technological optimism of the interwar period. This 1927 poster was created during a transformative era in European design, where modernist ideals sought to marry art with everyday life.

Paul Schuitema

Paul Schuitema (1897–1973) was a Dutch graphic designer, typographer, and photographer, widely recognised for his contributions to the De Stijl and Constructivist movements. Born in the Netherlands, he initially trained as a painter at the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague but shifted his focus to graphic design, influenced by the rise of modernist principles. Schuitema became a pioneer of photomontage, integrating bold typography with dynamic photographic elements, particularly in commercial advertising and industrial design. A key figure in Dutch modernism, he was also associated with the avant-garde Ring nieuwe reclame group, advocating for design as a tool for mass communication. Beyond graphic design, Schuitema was a keen furniture designer and filmmaker.
