Wintersports in Austria, c.1950s, by Paul Aigner

This captivating vintage poster showcases a joyful young woman in a vibrant yellow ski jacket and wool gloves, her hand shielding her eyes from the bright sun as she gazes across a breathtaking Alpine landscape. Behind her, a cable car transports skiers across the snowy mountains, while the deep blue sky provides a striking contrast to the pristine white snow. The bold blue typography at the bottom declares "AUSTRIA" in capital letters, with "Wintersports in" elegantly scripted above it.

The poster was created during the post-World War II tourism revival in Austria, likely in the early 1950s, when the country was actively promoting itself as a premier winter sports destination. This period marked a significant recovery for Austrian tourism, which had been severely impacted by the war. Artist Paul Aigner (1909-1984) was commissioned by Österreichische Verkehrswerbung Wien (Austrian Tourism Promotion Vienna) to create promotional materials that would attract international visitors to Austria's famous ski resorts. His distinctive artistic style, which combined realistic portraiture with vibrant colours and dynamic compositions, helped establish Austria's image as a modern, accessible winter sports paradise during this crucial rebuilding period.

Paul Aigner was a significant figure in Austrian commercial art during the mid-20th century. After being released from captivity in 1947 following World War II, he worked extensively for the Austrian tourism industry, creating numerous iconic posters including this celebrated "Winter sports in Austria" series. His work was often criticized by the Austrian arts establishment for its realistic, modernized style that resembled American commercial graphics, but the Austrian and German public embraced his designs enthusiastically. Aigner's forward-thinking approach to graphic design earned him a commercial arts award from Austrian president Karl Renner. The poster was printed by Bruder Rosenbaum in Vienna, a notable printing company of the era.
