Engagez-vous dans les Troupes de la Métropole, 1916, by Roger de Valerio

This striking French recruitment poster features a bold composition of a large blue military tank, viewed from below, with a commanding officer atop saluting. In the foreground, a silhouetted figure, possibly a new recruit or another officer, returns the salute. The background is a gradient of yellow, creating contrast with the blue tones of the tank. At the bottom, an official message from the French Ministry of War invites young men to enlist in the metropolitan troops, directing them to gendarmerie brigades, recruitment offices, or their nearest regiment.

Produced during World War I, this poster reflects France’s urgent need for soldiers to reinforce its army in a prolonged conflict. By 1916, the war had reached a critical phase, with the battles of Verdun and the Somme demanding vast military resources. Recruitment posters like this were designed to appeal to national pride and duty, using strong visual symbolism to emphasize strength and modern warfare. Tanks had only recently been introduced to the battlefield, making their appearance in propaganda a powerful statement of technological advancement.

Roger de Valerio (1896–1951) was a prolific French poster artist, known for his dynamic and modernist approach to commercial and propaganda design. As an art director for the printer Devambez, he produced numerous posters for a variety of industries, including tourism, entertainment, and war efforts. His work is characterized by bold typography, simplified forms, and a keen sense of movement.
