Davos, 1905, by Walther Koch (1875–1915)

This poster captures the serene winter landscape of Davos, a renowned alpine destination in Switzerland. Framed by a snow-laden tree in the foreground, the composition opens onto a tranquil scene of snowy mountains reflecting sunlight under a pale green sky. The central feature is the frozen lake nestled amid the valley, with soft pastel tones and crisp contrasts emphasising the pristine beauty of the Swiss Alps. The design utilises flat colours and stylised forms.

Swiss artist Walther Koch was active during the early 20th century. His work for Davos reflects the rise of the alpine health resort industry, as Davos gained international prominence for its clean mountain air and therapeutic benefits, attracting visitors from across Europe. The poster exemplifies the Art Nouveau aesthetic prevalent in early 1900s advertising, with its decorative lettering and emphasis on nature’s beauty.

Davos

Nestled in the Swiss Alps at an elevation of 1,560 meters (5,100 feet), Davos holds the distinction of being Europe's highest city. In the 19th century, its dry, high-altitude climate made it a renowned health resort for tuberculosis patients, leading to the establishment of numerous sanatoriums. Today, Davos is globally recognized for hosting the annual World Economic Forum, where leaders from various sectors convene to discuss pressing global issues. Beyond its role in international affairs, Davos boasts one of Switzerland's largest ski resorts and is home to the Spengler Cup, an international ice hockey tournament held every December.
