Fat City USA – [Aspen Wallposter 7], 1971, by Thomas W. Benton

This striking poster critiques American consumerism and excess by subverting the imagery of the United States flag. The traditional stars in the blue field are replaced with dollar signs and distorted star shapes, symbolising the commodification of national identity. Beneath the blue field, the red and white stripes are interrupted by a dripping, melting form that adds a sense of decay and instability. The bold black lettering at the bottom, reading "FAT CITY USA," further underscores the satirical commentary.

Thomas W. Benton, an American artist and activist, was known for his politically charged screenprints and posters during the 1960s and 70s. Based in Aspen, Colorado, Benton created the Aspen Wallposter series in collaboration with journalist Hunter S. Thompson. The series became synonymous with countercultural movements and dissent against the Vietnam War and capitalist excess. This 1971 design reflects the era’s growing disillusionment with American politics and values, embodying Benton’s signature style of bold, graphic minimalism paired with sharp political critique.

Thomas Whelan Benton (1930–2007) was an American artist renowned for his politically charged silkscreen posters and close collaboration with writer Hunter S. Thompson. Born in Oakland, California, Benton served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War before studying architecture at the University of Southern California. In 1963, he relocated to Aspen, Colorado, where he built his own home and studio, immersing himself in the local art scene. Benton's art gained prominence in the 1960s and 1970s, particularly through his anti-war and political posters, including the iconic 1970 "Hunter S. Thompson for Sheriff" campaign poster.
