Monaco, 1935, by Géo Ham

This artwork features a streamlined silver race car, possibly a Bugatti or Alfa Romeo, in the foreground, its wheels slightly lifted as it speeds along the Monaco circuit. A red competitor follows closely behind, adding to the sense of intense competition. The backdrop showcases Monaco’s golden-hued architecture, nestled into the rocky hillside, with the azure sky and a silhouette of palm fronds framing the scene.

The 1935 Monaco Grand Prix, held on 22 April 1935, was won by Italian driver Luigi Fagioli, driving for Mercedes-Benz. The Monaco Grand Prix, established in 1929, quickly became one of the most prestigious events in motorsport. The 1935 race was notable for the dominance of German and Italian teams, reflecting the technological advancements and intense national rivalries of the era.

Géo Ham, born Georges Hamel (1900–1972), was a renowned French painter and illustrator celebrated for his dynamic depictions of automobiles and aircraft. His fascination with speed and machinery began in childhood, inspired by early aviation and motor racing events. After studying at the École nationale supérieure des arts décoratifs in Paris, he gained prominence for his illustrations in publications like L'Illustration. In 1931, he was appointed as the official painter for French aviation. Beyond his artistic endeavors, Ham was also an active participant in motorsports, competing in events such as the 1934 24 Hours of Le Mans.
