Beaumaris Castle, North Wales, 1955, by Norman Wilkinson

This poster depicts Beaumaris Castle, one of the most famous medieval fortifications in Wales, surrounded by lush greenery and a reflective moat. The weathered stone walls, covered in creeping vegetation, are illustrated with soft tones of grey, orange, and green, while the tranquil water below mirrors the castle's imposing structure. Birds soar across a pastel sky, adding movement to the serene composition. Wilkinson’s precise detailing of the castle’s architecture contrasts beautifully with the natural elements, capturing the enduring harmony between history and the landscape.

Beaumaris Castle, built in the late 13th century under the orders of King Edward I, was part of his ambitious campaign to consolidate English rule over Wales. The castle is noted for its symmetrical design and innovative defences but remains incomplete due to financial and logistical constraints during its construction. Norman Wilkinson, celebrated for his contributions to marine art and poster design, was instrumental in promoting British travel through his vibrant and evocative railway posters.

Norman Wilkinson

Norman Wilkinson (1878–1971) was a British artist, illustrator, and naval officer best known for pioneering the concept of dazzle camouflage during the First World War. Born in Cambridge, he trained at the Portsmouth and Southsea School of Art before establishing himself as a marine painter, producing evocative seascapes and maritime scenes. His career spanned illustration, poster design, and military service, with notable works for the London & North Western Railway and Southern Railway, where his vibrant travel posters became iconic. During WWI, he devised dazzle camouflage, a bold geometric patterning technique designed to confuse enemy submarines rather than conceal ships, significantly reducing naval losses. Wilkinson later became an official war artist in both world wars and was elected President of the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours.
