Sharaku Poster, by Ikko Tanaka

This bold and minimalist poster by Ikko Tanaka reimagines the iconic 18th-century ukiyo-e portraiture of Toshusai Sharaku with modern abstraction. The composition distils the face into geometric forms, with a stark white oval head, a blue crown, and oversized circles in green, blue, and brown overlaying the design. Set against a dark background, the simple shapes create a striking visual contrast, evoking traditional Japanese aesthetics through a contemporary lens.

Ikko Tanaka, a pioneering figure in Japanese graphic design, often bridged historical art with modernist sensibilities. This poster pays homage to Sharaku, a mysterious Edo-period artist famed for his expressive kabuki actor portraits, blending the historical richness of Japanese art with the clean, experimental design trends of the late 20th century. In the 1980s, Japanese designers like Tanaka were at the forefront of global graphic design, celebrated for their mastery of simplicity, balance, and the integration of cultural heritage into modern visual communication.

We've carefully remastered this print to make it available for you to enjoy. Our restoration process is detailed and precise but, because this artwork was never created digitally and no original digital file exists, some slight imperfections may remain when viewed up close, including some slightly blurred edges. To preserve its quality, we only offer it in sizes up to A2. Please do check the final product photo carefully and ensure you're happy before purchasing.
