This bold and highly stylized Art Deco poster for St Raphaël Quinquina features two abstract waiters —a red waiter in the foreground just ahead of a taller, white waiter to his right. The contrast between the two colours is striking, set against a deep black background that emphasizes their forms. The typography is just as dynamic, with "St Raphaël" written in an elegant, flowing yellow script and "QUINQUINA" in a more restrained green sans-serif font below.
St Raphaël Quinquina was a popular French aperitif infused with quinine, a key ingredient in many medicinal and leisure beverages of the time. The brand used innovative advertising to distinguish itself, commissioning leading graphic designers to craft sophisticated, eye-catching posters. The 1930s marked a golden age of poster advertising in France, where Art Deco aesthetics dominated visual culture.
Charles Loupot (1892–1962) was a Swiss-born French graphic artist who played a crucial role in shaping modern advertising. His career spanned several decades, during which he worked for major brands such as St Raphaël, Peugeot, and Air France. Known for his ability to distil complex ideas into bold, elegant compositions, Loupot’s work exemplified the refined, streamlined aesthetic of the Art Deco movement. His posters remain some of the most iconic in 20th-century graphic design.
