Teatr Wielki – Czajkowski, 1960s, by Jan Lenica
This visually striking poster by Jan Lenica advertises a production of Pyotr Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake (Jezioro Łabędzie) at the Teatr Wielki in Poland. The composition features a stylized swan emerging from swirling blue waves, its head adorned with a delicate flower. The fluid, undulating lines and deep colour contrasts create a dreamlike effect, evoking both the grace of ballet and the tragic beauty of the story.
Teatr Wielki, Poland’s national opera house, has long been a centre of cultural excellence, known for grand productions of classical and contemporary works. Swan Lake, first performed in 1877, is one of the world’s most famous ballets, telling the story of Princess Odette, who is transformed into a swan by an evil sorcerer’s curse. This poster reflects the Polish avant-garde design movement of the 20th century, which often used abstraction and symbolism.
Jan Lenica (1928–2001) was a renowned Polish graphic designer, illustrator, and filmmaker. He was a key figure in the Polish School of Posters, known for its bold use of colour, abstraction, and surreal elements. Lenica’s work extended into experimental animation, influencing the visual language of animated film.
