Wengernalpbahn, 1924, by Emil Cardinaux

This vintage travel poster vividly portrays a train journeying towards Wengen, set against the majestic backdrop of the Jungfrau mountain in the Swiss Alps. The composition captures the stark beauty of the Bernese Oberland region, with the railway line winding through lush alpine meadows and ascending towards the snow-capped peaks.

Created in 1924, this poster was commissioned to promote the Wengernalp Railway (Wengernalpbahn), a cogwheel train system established in the late 19th century. The railway connects the villages of Lauterbrunnen and Grindelwald to the car-free resort of Wengen and further up to Kleine Scheidegg, serving as a vital link for both locals and tourists. The Wengernalpbahn remains operational today, celebrated as the world's longest continuous rack and pinion railway, offering passengers breathtaking views of the Swiss Alps.

Emil Cardinaux (1877–1936) was a Swiss painter and graphic artist. Born in Bern, he initially pursued law before dedicating himself to art, studying in Munich under prominent artists. Cardinaux is often credited with creating the first modern Swiss travel poster in 1908, featuring the Matterhorn, which garnered widespread acclaim. Throughout his career, he produced over 130 posters, predominantly showcasing Swiss landscapes and tourist destinations.

We've carefully remastered this print to make it available for you to enjoy. Our restoration process is detailed and precise but, because this artwork was never created digitally and no original digital file exists, some slight imperfections may remain when viewed up close, including some slightly blurred edges.
